We're Getting Ice and More on the Ice Storm Story...

Yes, we are getting ice. Little white pellets that sound like popcorn hitting the window. It turned over to snow about an hour ago but now it is back to sleet. The driveway is covered in ice. It is all sparkly and pretty just don't dare step on it. It is very slick, I tried when getting these pictures, so I came in raised the window and cheated....

                                                    Ice skating anyone???

The ice pellets are so big that the flash is making them shine like little stars. It sure is pretty you have to admit that.

This is the grill about an hour after it started at 7pm. It is protected by the house too so it was coming down pretty hard to get this covered already. No grilling tonight :)

We were/are ready for a power outage. We filled pitchers and these 5 gal water totes just in case. Not enough to last for too long but surely we wouldn't be without power for days again. Or maybe we could.... The news said we could get up to 1 inch of sleet with 1/4 inch of ice. As long as the wind doesn't get too bad we might be ok, that makes those limbs snap.

The news said there are several accidents as the roads are so slick. Schools and businesses are already delaying for 2 hours, but if it gets worse I'm sure they will cancel school.  Thank goodness none of us have to be out on the roads tomorrow. Hannah doesn't have school and well you know we don't have to go to work.

I forgot to tell you in my story last night about our ice storm nightmare that I also had an accident after the power came back on. My parents had come up to the house to see us and my Mom took some dishes home to wash for me, they were kind of stacked up. We decided to go out and pick up some limbs. I was already worn out, living like we were, hauling water to the animals, and trying to entertain a 4 yr old with no power. Some one asked why we didn't leave, well we couldn't because we had too many animals to care for and leaving your home in these conditions is so vulnerable. We did stay at my parents for a few days for a break. Anyway, after we had picked up some limbs we were walking back into the house on the sidewalk. My foot caught on an edge that was high and I feel "flat" on my face. I was carrying some items my Mom had brought and I couldn't catch myself. I had this big abrasion on my knee about the size of a half dollar. It didn't tear my jeans but sure messed up my knee. We called my OB doctor and he asked if I could feel the baby move, I said yes, and so he said I didn't have to come in. Good! I don't think I could have made it to the hospital. I think falling on the items (which by the way I broke into pieces) took the fall off my pregnant belly.  I remember my Dad and Art had to lift me up off the side walk, I had no energy to get up. I went in the house and sat down and cried. My knee hurt so bad, and it hurt for weeks. I still have a scar on my knee to this day and that was 22 yrs ago.
Hannah was born safe and sound, we had power and all went back to normal. Well as normal as it could be with a newborn and a toddler.
So from an "icy" Indiana best wishes!

    1. Yes, unfortunately it is pretty ha ha.... And I guess it "is" prettier since we don't have to go anywhere.
It is supposed to warm up so it will melt fast I hope.

  2. You have some wonderful photos - makes a person feel the cold! I certainly wouldn't have known you took that picture through the raised window if you hadn't said it. Stay off icy surfaces if possible. I think falling when pregnant would be so scary. I had two November babies, and two March babies so I would have been vulnerable during those winters. Can't remember any problems. You were so fortunate that you and Hannah got over the fall you took.

    1. Oh my gosh just stepped outside, our driveway is one hard packed surface at least 1" thick of nothing but ice. It is shinny under the security light. Yes, I know we were both fortunate we didn't get hurt. Like I said I think the items against my chest that I was carrying softened the blow.

  3. We got slammed pretty good here at the Ranch on Dardenne Prairie, About 6 inches of snow and who knows how much ice coating. Hoping for a warm up this weekend, but ice takes longer to melt than plain snow.Even though we have two 4 wheel drive trucks, they stay in the garage when it's ice covered.Be safe out there. Sam & Donna....

    1. They said on the news 43 on Sat so that should help a lot. 4 wheel drives on ice are no match either, they slip and slide on the ice too. Best to stay in and just "look" out. Thanks.

    1. So far they have stayed on, they did flicker a couple of times last night, and we thought "oh no" but they stayed on, thank goodness!

  5. Snow - you can maybe get around in it. Ice - no way. I haven't really lived anywhere where ice storms were an issue and I am so glad. And Hannah does have a rather exciting story to tell her kids some day about how Mom tried to squish her.

    1. You're right ice is impossible to get around on. I have driven on it before and had to go around 4mph and the don't dare hit the brakes. Yes, she will have cute story, hadn't thought of that :)

  6. What a story again. I'm glad that the baby stayed put till after the storm and both of you were all right.

Lets hope that you don't get more rain on top of that sleet.
    Have a great weekend.
    Hugs,

    1. Yes, you are so right Merikay. And that is exactly what we are doing. I have wedding invitations to address so won't get bored. And it is supposed to get up to 43 tomorrow so it should start melting.
